Nathan Russell
Owner & Managing Attorney
Born and raised on a fifth-generation dairy and crop farm in Shullsburg, Wisconsin, Nathan Russell brings both deep agricultural roots and legal expertise to every farmer, family, and rural business he serves. Growing up on the family farm gave him firsthand experience with the realities of farm operations, land stewardship, multi-generation transitions, and the hard work that defines rural life — experience he now channels into helping clients protect what matters most.
Nathan pairs his Agricultural Economics degree and Juris Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with years of real-world agricultural knowledge. Before starting Russell Law Offices, he taught Agricultural Education and served as an agriculture and commercial lender — giving him a unique perspective on farm finances, credit, and business planning.
This background allows Nathan to provide practical, grounded legal counsel in areas that are especially important to farms and rural enterprises, including:
-
Farm & Business Transfers: Helping farms plan and execute smooth ownership transitions across generations.
-
Real Estate & Land Use: Advising on land purchases, sales, easements, and disputes affecting farm property.
-
Agriculture Contracts: Drafting and reviewing agreements tied to land leases, equipment, partnerships, and more.
-
Estate Planning for Farm Families: Tailoring wills, trusts, and succession plans that reflect the value of land and livestock.
-
Probate & Trust Administration: Guiding families through complex estate matters with an eye toward continuity on the farm.
-
Dispute Resolution: Representing farmers and rural businesses in civil litigation, creditor matters, and contested family law issues involving farm assets.
Nathan doesn’t just understand agriculture — he lives it. He met his wife, Jennifer (an agricultural education and FFA instructor), through the FFA and together they raise six children — often traveling the country showing livestock including cattle, sheep and pigs. He also serves in his community as a longtime girls’ basketball coach and remains involved in agricultural education and local leadership.
Licensed in both Wisconsin and Illinois, Nathan is committed to helping farm families and rural business owners navigate legal challenges with confidence, clarity, and respect for the way of life they’ve built.
